Our American Contra Dance weeks are tremendously popular and often sell well out in advance so we really do encourage early booking! Our Autumn dance week is led by American caller Cis Hinkle with music by Box of Frogs.

Dance workshops take place each morning with fun optional outings and activities in the afternoons. There is usually a musicians’ workshop Wednesday tea-time, so bring instruments too. Dances every evening, all in the lovely setting of Halsway Manor!

Who is it for?

Dancers of all levels of experience; newcomers to Contra are welcome (though some related dance experience would be useful), with plenty to challenge more experienced dancers too!

Friendly and welcoming group of people, plenty of laughs, energetic dancing and really enjoyable sessions in the bar afterwards!

The Team

Cis Hinkle has delighted contra and square dancers since 1985 with her skilled teaching, welcoming manner, playful enthusiasm, and masterful selection of dances. She is in great demand at music and dance festivals all over the US, England, and Denmark.  When not on the road, Cis teaches t’ai chi classes in her native Atlanta, Georgia.

Box of Frogs are two of the most exciting players on the Contra dance scene. With creative accordion player Ali Messer (Blue Mountain, Alterations, Fat Harry, Fiddle Chicks ) and high energy fiddling from Linda Game (ECDB, Token Women) expect some fabulous dance music. Box the gnat and swat the flea, but can you spot the frog…?

Meg Griffin is a familiar face at Halsway Manor, and the perfect, friendly and knowledgeable host to make sure you get the best from your break at Halsway!
