The Historical Dance Society Weekend

Dance, music and masque at the court of Elizabeth I

This lively weekend is based on re-creating the Masque of Diana and Actaeon, performed at the court of Elizabeth I. Tutors are Ann Hinchliffe, Anne Daye and Sam Brown. You'll learn Elizabethan social and court dances as a basis for our version of the masque, with sung and spoken parts for people willing to have a go. Friday and Saturday evenings will offer some social dancing — a chance for anyone with Tudor-style costumes to wear them -- and a talk on the historical background. After rehearsals on Sat afternoon and Sunday morning, we'll perform the masque on Sunday afternoon.

The weekend is organised by the Historical Dance Society but you don't have to be a member. Beginners and improvers will learn with Ann Hinchliffe; if you have some dance experience (any style) you can join Anne Daye's class. For the first time we have a music tutor, international lutenist Sam Brown. Any portable acoustic instrument (pitch 440) welcome, if you can read music; music will be sent in advance. Please let us know your level. Tutors are experienced, knowledgeable and friendly.

Information about what to bring will be sent nearer the time. Please email [email protected] or [email protected] if you have any questions.
